Your Must-Have List for a Leech Lake Fall Cabin Getaway!

October 9, 2020

If you’re looking for the best season for a visit to Walker, Fall should be at the top of your list. It’s prime season for both hunting and fishing. The fall colors are incredible. The weather is perfect for a horseback ride, family forest hike, or dinner & drinks on an outdoor patio.

The options on and Leech Lake are nearly limitless. Bike the nearby trails through the Chippewa National Forest or Bunyan State Forest. Plan a family trip to the Pine River Riding Stables for an autumn hayride and cups of hot cocoa. Visit nearby Walker, where the shoppers in your crew can enjoy a whole day of fall fashions. Looking for a great gift, for yourself or a friend? Our local gift shop, Christmas Point, offers fresh and delicious wild rice, along with several other gift-ready items and treats.

Or, you can of course take advantage of the fall fishing, cooler waters and gorgeous colors that surround your boat or you on the banks.

Of course, being on the lake in the fall does take some preparation. If you’re visiting one of our resorts’ great cabins, you won’t need to take a full set of camping gear. In fact, you may only need one small bag!

As fall is certainly sweater season, bring your favorite sweatshirt or flannel, or even knit sweater. To be safe, bring a lighter and a heavier one, that way you can be outside amid Minnesota’s fall colors and be perfectly safe.

Bring an extra pair of pants, just in case. Getting a little wet on Leech Lake or muddy on our trails is fun, but may be a little more uncomfortable in cooler weather! While Leech Lake’s cabins are sure to keep you cozy, you may want a pair of cozy slippers — or even nice flannel pajama pants — to wear around your cabin! Tiger Lily’s in Walker has all the fashions you may need.

Check your trusty weather app ahead of time, so you can decide whether it’s time to break out that big winter coat, or a lighter shell or rain jacket. Or, bring both!

Staying warm and cozy is important, especially if you’re outside, but make sure you stock up too! Kaffe Havn Coffee Roasting is a great place to stock up on your coffee needs for a cup of Joe in the mornings that you’re visiting the Leech Lake area. And of course, there’s plenty of other shopping and eating options in the town of Walker once your fall exploring is over!

Don’t forget to bring S’more and snack items for those evenings around the bonfire or table as you play board games. But if you do, Walker has you covered for all your needs! And during the fall days, whether you’re fishing, kayaking, hiking or just on an outdoor adventure, the Leech Lake Area has everything you could imagine for your perfect fall getaway.
