Autumn in northern Minnesota is a magical time of year. The crisp air, quiet trails, and calm lakes make it the perfect season to hop on your bike and explore. Here are the top five biking trails you won’t want to miss!
Heartland State Trail
Distance: 27 miles from Walker to Park Rapids • Paved
If you’re looking for the perfect fall bike ride, the Heartland State Trail should be at the top of your list. This 27-mile stretch winds through the beautiful Chippewa National Forest, where you’ll pedal past quiet woodlands and glittering lakes while keeping an eye out for deer, loons, and other local wildlife.
The fully paved trail makes it a great choice whether you’re riding with kids or just want a comfortable, easygoing adventure. Come mid-October, you’ll have the trail mostly to yourself; the summer crowds have thinned out, the air is crisp and cool, and the forest puts on its spectacular autumn show. It’s hard to beat for a peaceful day on two wheels.
Paul Bunyan State Trail
Distance:120 miles from Brainerd to Lake Bemidji • Paved
Minnesota’s longest bike trail is quite the adventure. The Paul Bunyan stretches for 120 miles through forests, wetlands, and along some truly gorgeous lakes. You don’t have to tackle the whole thing; plenty of folks just pick a favorite section for an afternoon ride. But if you’re feeling ambitious, it makes for an amazing multi-day trip. Fall riding here is absolutely magical, with cooler weather, fewer people on the trail, and nothing but the sounds of nature around you.
North Country National Scenic Trail (Cass County section)
Distance: Various distances • Natural forest paths
Now here’s something for the more adventurous riders. The North Country Trail is part of a massive 3,200-mile trail system that spans multiple states, and the Cass County portion that winds through the Chippewa National Forest is a real gem. These are natural forest paths, so you’ll want a mountain bike or something with good tread. The payoff? Incredible forested trails, stunning lake views, and the kind of quiet solitude that’s hard to find these days. Perfect for fall mountain biking when you want to get away from it all.
Soo Line North Trail
Distance: 52 miles through Cass County • Natural surface
The Soo Line North offers one of the most authentic wilderness experiences you’ll find on two wheels in northern Minnesota. This 52-mile trail winds through Cass County before reaching the community of Cass Lake, with much of the route cutting right through the heart of Bowstring State Forest. There’s something magical about pedaling through dense forest canopy where the only sounds are your tires on the trail and maybe the call of a loon in the distance. Wildlife sightings are practically guaranteed; deer, black bears, eagles, and countless other creatures call this forest home, and you’re likely to spot them as you ride through their territory. Thanks to Cass County for providing access to this gem and to the Eagle Country ATV Club for keeping it in great shape. It’s the kind of trail that reminds you why northern Minnesota is such a special place to explore by bike.
Mi-Ge-Zi Trail
Distance: 19-mile paved loop • Chippewa National Forest
Named for the Ojibwe word meaning “bald eagle,” the Mi-Ge-Zi Trail is a stunning 19-mile paved loop that showcases some of the best scenery in the Chippewa National Forest. This well-maintained trail takes you along the shores of both Pike Bay and Cass Lake, offering gorgeous water views and excellent opportunities to spot the trail’s namesake bald eagles soaring overhead. What makes this trail especially convenient is its multiple access points where you can start from the Forest Supervisor’s Office, Cass Lake Wayside Rest Area, Norway Beach Recreation Area, or the South Pike Bay picnic area, making it easy to customize your ride length or explore different sections. Whether you tackle the full loop or just a portion, you’ll be cycling through pristine forest with those classic northern Minnesota lake vistas that make every mile worth it.
