THE SURVEY RESULTS ARE IN! LEECH LAKE FISH SPECIES & REGULATIONS

Every year the Minnesota DNR is tasked with counting fish, not just a few but A LOT of fish! They do this so they can better manage fisheries and set appropriate fishing regulations. Using their DNR LakeFinder, we are able to see the results for Leech Lake. Let’s take a look at what they had to say!

Leech Lake in Cass County, near the town of Walker, MN has a wide variety of fish to be found in the lake: Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Burbot, Cisco Species, Hybrid Sunfish, Lake Whitefish, Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Tullibee (Cisco), WALLEYE, Yellow Bullhead, Yellow Perch, Bowfin (Dogfish), Shorthead Redhorse, White Sucker, Banded Killifish, Bigmouth Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, Bluntnose Minnow, Brook Stickleback, Central Mudminnow, Common Shiner, Emerald Shiner, Fathead Minnow, Golden Shiner, Iowa Darter, Johnny Darter, Logperch, Longnose Dace, Mimic Shiner, Mottled Sculpin, Sand Shiner, Spotfish Shiner, Spottail Shiner, Tadpole Madtom and Trout Perch. Whew that was a mouthful!

Leech Lake has special fishing regulations that differ from statewide or border water regulations for certain species and take precedence over general fishing regulations.

  • Walleye: All from 20-26” must be immediately caught and released. One over 26” allowed in possession. Possession is limited to four.

Leech Lake Indian Reservation:

  • Cisco: Limit 50 possession.

  • Whitefish” Limit 25 possession

General and inland water fishing regulations can be found on the MN DNR website if you need additional info before heading out. We also would like to remind you to please “Be a Hero, Transport Zero”, help prevent the spread of invasive species. MN DNR has also found both Zebra Mussel and Eurasian Watermilfoil in Leech Lake.
