Memorial Day Weekend Is Just Around The Corner!

Firstly, we at Leech Lake Tourism Bureau and our partners would like to thank the families and members of the armed services that have fought and served our country. Memorial Day is not just a day off but a day to honor the ultimate sacrifice so many of our brothers and sisters in arms have made for our nation.

We Thank You!

After an awesome and successful fishing opener on May 15th, we are excited for another busy weekend in the Leech Lake Area! Our fingers are crossed for blue skies and sunny days! Whether you are here to enjoy world-class fishing, shopping, relaxing, or anything else, we have a little bit of everything for all members of your group!

Here’s What You Need To Know For Memorial Day Weekend!

  • Respect The Guidelines!
With vaccinations have come relaxed COVID-19 measures in some places, but others still require masks and/or social distancing. Remember that the start of summer is meant to be fun for everyone! Please respect the measures our local businesses have in place, whether they’ve kept or relaxed their rules, and treat all of our local employees with respect.
  • Bring The Whole Family!
Don’t leave the family members behind! Many of our resorts here on Leech Lake are family-friendly. And even a few are pup-friendly as well! Check out places to stay here!
    Where to Stay
  • Boat FAQs
    • Don’t Have One? No Worries!:
If you haven’t decided whether to purchase your own boat for the summer, check out our listings that offer boat or motor rentals.
    • Have One! Stay Here!
Bringing your fishing boat? Make sure you stay on Leech Lake near a dock.
    • Looking To Buy? Check Out Here!
If you have so much fun you decide to get a boat for summer Leech Lake fishing, make sure to check out Walker Marine for boat sales, water goods and everything you need for your trip.
  • Get Your Fish On!
Saturday, May 15, was the official fishing opener for walleye, bass, northern pike and lake trout in Minnesota. Here is what you need to know!

    • What Are The Limits?
Let’s discuss new limits for 2021 from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. You can now keep 4 walleye on Leech Lake, and anglers on Leech Lake can keep one walleye that measures more than 20 inches. While you may have heard that whitefish have no limit on Minnesota lakes, please know that Leech Lake is your exception! You can keep 25 whitefish on Leech Lake, and 50 cisco, which are also known as tullibee.
    • License Rules Here:
Make sure everyone in your party who is 16 and older has a license. An annual fishing license lets you fish until Feb. 28! There are always lower-cost options as well, however.
If you’re purchasing a combination license, such as for a married couple, make sure you both bring your driver’s license or state license to Leech Lake if you’re over 21. Both are required now, as well as some personal information for each of you on file. However, one spouse can pick up their license first and the other can pick up theirs later, so you don’t have to be together at the time of purchase.
    • Do No Operate Well Under The Influence.
While you can drink a beer in your boat, stay under the legal limit of 0.8% BAC. Ask any rental facilities for their rules when renting a boat. Remember that Memorial Day on Leech Lake is a time for families, and we want everyone to come back and enjoy Leech Lake!
  • Where to stay:
If your best fishing buddy has four legs, make sure you check out our lodging options that allow dogs. Dog Friendly
If opening weekend is your first Leech Lake camping trip of the season, we have plenty of RV hookups as well. RV Hookups
And with vaccinations and reopenings bring us together, find a resort or cabin on the water for your reunited group! Group Options
  • Where to shop:
There will be plenty of places to nab that fishing license, but Swanson’s Bait and Tackle has it all. You’ll find gas, groceries, a souvenir to take home, and, well, bait and tackle.
  • Where to eat:
We have beer, wine, more wine, restaurants on Leech lake, and eateries all around Walker! Come explore the area and reserve a place to stay so you can enjoy the weekend.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend! Again, thank you to the members of the armed forces and all who have given their lives to this country.
