Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report for January 21st, 2025
January 23, 2025
Report from the Dock
Through this stretch of cold air, fishing in many areas became extremely slow, but it remains surprisingly solid in others. The weather and high pressure systems seem to be the culprits for less aggressive walleyes this week.
Many reports indicated that anglers were seeing plenty of fish on their electronics, but they had a difficult time getting them to bite. The exception has been at night, when a few more walleyes have been caught on slow-moving baits such as deadsticks or rattle reels with smaller minnows. Crappies have also locked their mouths in most areas. Again, there’s some fish being caught at night, but consistently doing so has been difficult.
Last weekend’s inland trout season started on a high note. Despite the cold, participation seemed high and the fish mostly cooperated. In just about every area that features stream or lake trout fishing options, reports “were better than expected” given the cold weather.

Perch action has been strong this week with good reports off GrandVuFlats in 9 to 14 feet, around Bear Island in 15 to 20 feet, or between Goose Island and Pine Point in 12 to 14 feet. The few walleyes being caught are hitting deadsticks at night, on or near structure, in 15 to 20 feet.
