Leech Lake Fishing Report for March 4th, 2026

Report from the Dock – Minnesota Ice Fishing Conditions
Fishing pressure across Minnesota was relatively light over the past week, but there has been some solid panfish action happening. While crappies continue to be found suspended over deep basin areas on many lakes, those deep fish seem to be less aggressive, almost sluggish, and not willing to participate. Many anglers reported seeing crappies on electronics in deep water, but getting them to bite proved challenging.
There were also more reports of crappies and blugills showing up in the shallow to mid-depth weeds, and those pods of fish seem to bite much more consistently. It’s getting to be that time of year when crappies, bluegills, and even perch start their annual push into shallow water to feed heavily.
Ice conditions across Minnesota remain mixed. Many lake accesses in the southern third of the state have been compromised, while ice and shorelines in northern Minnesota remain in good shape with few issues. Anglers should continue to check access conditions and use caution when heading out.
Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report – Walker, MN
On Leech Lake near Walker, MN, the 14- to 20-foot mud in Trader’s Bay and Portage Bay continues to produce the majority of larger perch. You’ll also find perch in shallower water in these bays, but they require a lot more sorting through small fish.
For crappies and bluegills on Leech Lake, focus on bays such as Boy Bay, Steamboat Bay, and Portage Bay in 9 to 11 feet of water. Look for cabbage beds and remaining vegetation, which are holding fish more consistently.
Eelpout continue to bite best at night on main lake bars in 17 to 25 feet, offering a solid after-dark option for anglers ice fishing on Leech Lake.
