Leech Lake Fishing Report for March 26th, 2024
March 28, 2024
Report from the Dock
Fishing reports were pretty limited this week across the entire state. The return of cold air, wind, and measurable snow across a large portion of Minnesota put everything on hold for the time being.
Open water remains in most locations throughout the southern three-quarters of the state, but it did get cold enough for some ice to redevelop on some small lakes, bays, and shorelines. You have to travel quite a ways north to find ice safe enough to get on and fish – think north of Blackduck, Lake of the Woods, or the Ely area as some possible options.
But even in those regions, there just hasn’t been much fishing activity, mainly due to a level of uncertainty with the ice. Can you go ice fishing in the far north this weekend? Probably, but extreme caution is advised. The pools on the Mississippi River might be a better fishing option at this point. Sauger and walleyes are biting where the season remains open.
Leech Lake Report
While much of the lake was open a week ago, it did get cold enough for portions of it to again lock up with a thin layer of ice. Recent winds were pushing any ice that remained on the lake as well. This area also received quite a bit of snow early this week, and there hasn’t been anyone fishing.
