Leech Lake Fishing Report for July 9th, 2025
July 9, 2025
Report from the Dock
The lakes were busy statewide during the Fourth of July weekend, and a huge majority of that activity was from recreational boaters, but understandably so, given it was so hot and humid. But the hot weather has been a bit less oppressive early this week, so many anglers have returned to fishing. Walleyes seem to be scattered, found in small pods, and eating in much shorter windows, mainly during low-light periods and after dark. Nightcrawlers remain the top live bait option, leeches are hanging in there, and there has been more trolling with crankbaits at night for walleyes this week than last. Panfish and bass reports have been solid in just about every location in the state. These are mostly off-shore fish, now relating to established weedlines, weedbeds, and weed points. The thicker and greener you can find them, the more fish they seem to be holding. Muskie reports remain light, but bucktails are triggering some fish.

A slip bobber and jig with a leech or piece of nightcrawler continues to produce walleyes. Better areas this week have been Five Mile Point in 18 to 22 feet, the Snakepit in 13 to 15 feet, and out from the campground in Portage Bay over 9 to 13 feet. Muskie activity has been better on the shallow rocks rather than weeds, especially in the Submarine Island and Mokie’s Reef areas.
