Leech Lake Fishing Report for April 30th, 2026

Report from the Dock – Minnesota Fishing Conditions
This week’s Minnesota fishing report shows that ice is now essentially gone across the state, with anglers needing to travel as far north as the Canadian border to find any remaining ice. Lakes such as Lake Kabetogama and Lake of the Woods still have some ice, but it is quickly disappearing, with bays already open or beginning to open.
As open water fishing in Minnesota continues to improve, crappie activity has picked up slightly from last week. However, cooler weather has kept water temperatures from rising quickly. Crappies are continuing their typical spring pattern, moving in and out of shallow areas like bays, harbors, and channels.
During sunny afternoons and evenings, fish are pushing into shallow water, while cooler, cloudy conditions are pushing them back out. The most consistent fishing reports are still coming from the 6 to 12 foot range, just outside traditional shallow spring locations. Bluegills and catch-and-release bass are following similar patterns.
Leech Lake Fishing Report – Walker, MN
On Leech Lake near Walker, recent wind and rain earlier this week cleared out any remaining ice from the main lake.
Most bays have been open for over a week, and crappies on Leech Lake are now starting to be caught in shallow water, typically in 2 to 5 feet within bays and boat harbors. As water temperatures continue to warm, anglers can expect a larger push of panfish into shallow areas, making these locations increasingly productive.
