View this week's fishing report on Leech Lake

Report from the Dock

Walleyes are being found deeper in some areas, 15 to 20 feet, but the majority of really consistent walleye bites remain in less than 10 feet. Water temperatures have not warmed much since last week, and in much of northern Minnesota, they’ve actually dropped a few degrees. As a result, minnows remain shallow and walleyes have stayed in to feed on them along wind-driven shoreline breaks and points. a jig or live bait rig with minnows continues to produce fish, although leeches and crawlers started showing up in more reports this week. Panfish activity is all over the place, again due to changing water temperatures. They seem to be moving in and out of shallow water either in pre-spawn mode, spawning, or they’ve wrapped it up. It just depends on what part of the state you’re fishing, but they’ll be extremely shallow or relating to emerging vegetation. Bass seem to be following similar patterns this week.

Leech Lake Report

The main-lake rocks, in 12 to 16 feet, started producing a few more walleyes on jigs tipped with pieces of crawler or minnow. The north side of Pelican Island, Mokie’s Reef, the Annex, and Submarine Island have been most productive. The Goose Island area and emerging weed edges in 9 to 12 feet have produced walleyes as well. Crappies seem to be moving in and out of the bulrushes and rice beds.

Report from the Dock Crappies and bluegills have kept anglers busy in many areas this week. Generally, Panfish are starting to spawn or are staging just outside of spawning areas; it just depends on water temperatures and where you’re at in the state. There were a lot of reports that indicated crappies and bluegills were […]

Report from the Dock The weather was ideal and there seemed to be a lot of people fishing during last weekend’s start to the walleye season. Bait and tackle shops were busy across the state. As is the case with most openers, walleyes bit well in some areas, while the bite in other locations was […]

Report from the Dock There was quite a bit of preparation taking place early this week statewide for the upcoming fishing opener. Minnow and leech supplies sound as if they should be much better than last year heading into opening weekend, and walleyes are expected to be shallow in most locations. Water temperatures are still […]

Report from the Dock Cool and windy conditions during the past week have changed the state’s crappie bite in most areas. While crappies were being found in many shallow, traditional spring locations last week, they’ve since moved out or seem to be moving in and out of shallow water with the coming and going weather […]
