Leech Lake Fishing Report — September 9, 2026

September 9, 2026

Labor Day is in the rearview, the crowds have cleared out, and Leech Lake is settling into that quiet, productive fall stretch anglers wait all year for. Water temps are still working their way down, walleyes are getting more predictable by the day, and there’s a real sense that the best fishing of 2026 is still ahead of us. If you’ve got a free afternoon this week, now’s the time to use it.

Leech Lake Fishing Report – Walker, Minn

Here’s what you need to know this week before hitting the water.

Gill’s Walleye Report

With the post-Labor Day quiet settling in, walleyes are turning on around the rocks again — crankbaits and jigs tipped with crawlers or minnows are producing well in 10 to 15 feet around the Annex, Bear Island, and Goose Island. Don’t overlook the wind-driven points either; fish are showing up in 10 to 12 feet whenever there’s a little chop pushing bait up against structure.

Air temps haven’t quite dipped enough yet to kick the true fall minnow bite into gear, so crawlers are still your most consistent bet for now. Keep a few minnows in the livewell too — reports are starting to trickle in of fish keying on them, and that bite should keep building as the nights cool off.

Gill’s Tip: With crowds thinned out post-Labor Day, this is prime time to work areas that got pounded all summer. Give those rock humps and points another look — walleyes settle back into a pattern once the boat traffic dies down.

Muskie Report

Fall muskie fishing on Leech Lake is starting to hit its stride. Fish are keying in on baitfish movement and showing up shallower around rock structure, especially early and late in the day. Bucktails remain a great searching bait for covering water, and it’s worth having a bigger profile bait rigged up in case you mark a larger fish following baitfish schools. Weed edges and rock-to-sand transitions are also worth a look as water temps continue to slide.

Bass, Pike & Panfish

Green weeds remain the name of the game for panfish and bass right now. Cabbage and sand grass in 6 to 9 feet throughout the bays are still holding bluegills, with crappies showing up better in the evenings. As more weeds start to brown out, keep moving until you find the healthiest remaining patch — that’s where the fish will be stacked up.

Northern pike continue to get more aggressive as the water cools, and windblown weed edges are a solid bet with spoons and spinnerbaits. Bass are following the same pattern as the muskies — some fish shallow, but the better ones are setting up around deeper green vegetation as they key in on the fall feed.

What I’d Bring This Week

When I’m loading the boat for Leech Lake this week, I have:

  • Crankbaits and jigs tipped with crawlers or minnows for walleyes
  • A few extra minnows on hand as the fall bite starts building
  • Bucktails, plus a bigger bait for muskies keying on baitfish
  • Spoons and spinnerbaits for aggressive pike on windblown weed edges
  • Panfish tackle for the healthiest remaining cabbage and sand grass

Fall fishing rewards anglers who stay mobile and follow the bait. Keep an eye on overnight temps, keep checking those wind-driven points, and be ready to adjust as the pattern keeps shifting week to week.

Gill’s Dockside Take – Minnesota Fishing Conditions

This is the stretch of fall that longtime Leech Lake anglers circle on the calendar, and it’s arriving right on schedule. With Labor Day behind us, the lake is quieter and the fish are starting to feed with more purpose. Walleye anglers should keep working those rocks and wind-driven points as the evening bite continues to build. Muskie hunters, this is your season — stay patient and keep working the shallow rock and transition zones. Panfish and pike anglers, follow the green weeds and windblown edges and you’ll find willing fish.

Some of the best fishing of the year is just getting started. Get out and enjoy it.
