Persistent, furnace-like temperatures have significantly reduced fishing activity across Minnesota this week. With fewer anglers on the water than in previous weeks, fishing reports have been limited in many areas, making it more difficult to identify consistent statewide patterns. On some lakes, so few anglers ventured out that reliable reports were hard to come by.
For those willing to brave the heat, the best fishing has continued to occur during the early morning and evening hours. Walleye anglers are still finding success by covering water with spinner rigs, crankbaits, and nightcrawlers, while anglers using forward-facing sonar are locating suspended fish and presenting jigs tipped with pieces of crawler. Electronics continue to make finding fish easier, but convincing them to bite remains the biggest challenge.
Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and bluegills continue to provide the most dependable action across Minnesota lakes. Healthy weedlines remain the primary holding areas for bass and panfish, while low-light periods continue to offer the best opportunity for anglers targeting summer walleyes.
Leech Lake Fishing Report – Walker, MN
Leech Lake walleye fishing continues to favor anglers targeting deeper summer structure. Trolling crankbaits or fishing jigs tipped with nightcrawlers has been producing walleyes in the Snake Pit area over 10 to 14 feet of water. The east side of Annex Reef has also been giving up walleyes in 12 to 16 feet using the same presentations.
Smallmouth bass continue to hold on rocky structure in 10 to 16 feet, where plastics have been the most productive bait. Largemouth bass remain active around the healthy cabbage beds throughout the bays, while bluegills and crappies are holding in the 6- to 9-foot cabbage and sand grass in Boy Bay, Agency Bay, and Sucker Bay. As summer patterns continue, anglers focusing on weedlines and fishing during the cooler parts of the day should find the most consistent action on Leech Lake.
