If you’re heading to Leech Lake this week, you’ve got plenty of ways to put fish in the boat. Walleyes are spread across several types of structure, bass and panfish are holding around healthy vegetation, and muskies are still giving anglers opportunities around rocks and sand.
Leech Lake Fishing Report – Walker, Minn
Here’s what you need to know before hitting the water.
Gill’s Walleye Report
The walleye bite is spread out right now, so don’t be afraid to move around and change presentations until you find active fish. Spinner rigs with crawlers are producing, along with slip bobbers, crankbaits, and jigs tipped with a piece of crawler. Minnows are also starting to become an option again as we move toward late summer. Look for walleyes in Portage Bay in 13 to 16 feet of water, along with areas around Bear Island, Goose Island, Snake Pit, and Annex in roughly 10 to 18 feet.
The biggest challenge this week isn’t necessarily getting a bite. It’s finding concentrations of larger fish. If you’re catching smaller walleyes without seeing much size, keep moving and work another piece of structure rather than waiting for bigger fish to arrive.
Gill’s Tip: Keep a few presentations ready. Cover water with a spinner or crankbait, then slow down with a jig or slip bobber once you locate fish.
Muskie Report
For muskie anglers, bucktails continue to be a solid choice around rocks and sand in approximately 8 to 12 feet of water. Work these areas thoroughly and stay ready at the boat. Late summer conditions can require some patience, but one good follow can change the whole day.
Bass & Panfish
Largemouth bass and panfish continue to provide consistent action throughout many of Leech Lake’s bays. Focus on cabbage and the edges of rice beds in about 6 to 9 feet of water. Healthy vegetation provides cover, baitfish, and plenty of opportunities for anglers looking for steady action. These areas can be especially good choices for families or anyone who simply wants to spend an afternoon catching fish.
What I’d Bring This Week
What I have packed in the boat for Leech Lake right now, I’d make sure you have it too:
- Crawlers and a selection of spinner rigs
- Slip bobbers and jigs
- Crankbaits for covering water
- Minnows where available
- Bucktails for muskies
- Tackle for working cabbage and rice edges for bass and panfish
The key this week is versatility. Fish are available, but they’re spread across different areas and presentations. Give yourself options and let the fish tell you what they want.

Late August is a great time to be on Leech Lake. There’s still plenty of summer fishing ahead, but we’re beginning that gradual transition toward fall patterns. For walleyes, stay mobile and work the 10 to 18 foot range around productive structure. For muskies, concentrate on rocks and sand. If bass and panfish are the goal, head toward cabbage and rice bed edges. Most importantly, enjoy the time on the water. That’s what Leech Lake fishing is all about.
